What Kinds of Toys Encourage Language in Toddlers
Toys that promote language development can really help your toddler learn to talk! I know because I am the Mother of a toddler girl and I use a few specific toys daily to help her learn new words! This post will be the story of my journey or should I say Amelia’s talking journey! I now have a little chatterbox who says new words daily and she is only 19 months old! Currently I am trying to get her to link two words together using various toys! Her speech is improving all the time and I am excited to see how much she has come on by her second Birthday!
Here I will talk about several things:- When should your toddler begin talking, How can I encourage my toddler to speak, and what kinds of toys encourage language.
When Should Toddler Begin Talking
This is one of the top questions parents ask about their toddlers. We all want to know when should toddler being talking and how many words they should be saying by a certain age. You can find 2 year old vocabulary list for my toddler when she was at this stage (Hint you will be super impressed at the words she knows!) The good news is that I helped her get to this stage by using toys that promote language development!
All toddlers are different but as a general guide, according to Kids Health most 18 month olds can say around 20 words; of course this varies between child. By the age of 2 both my toddlers could string a few words together and this is what it is expected at this stage.
How Can I Encourage My Toddler To Speak
The next important question after when should your toddler being talking, is how can I encourage my toddler to speak! The best way to do this is by talking and interacting with your child. I constantly talk to my toddler and explain everything I do. When in the supermarket I point at all the foods and tell my toddler what they are. Constant interaction and fun! Reading is another good idea. Two stories a night is what I read and have been doing this since my toddlers were 4/5 months old. One of the most fun things is using toys that encourage talking and this is what I will consider next!

There are so many fabulous toys that promote language development and encourage toddlers to speak and fortunately I have experience to tell you all about them. I have used the example of an Aquadoodle to show you how you used it to help my 2 year old learn new words and explain their vocabulary. I also used a dolls house to promote speech and language and it was so much fun! Hint when your toddlers have fun they want to repeat the process and this means enhanced learning.
Aquadoodle Toys That Promote Language Development
Do you find it difficult to encourage your toddler to speak or say new words? If so why not make it fun! I am going to show how I used Aquadoodle toys to promote language development in my toddler! It really worked for me but it took time, toddlers do not learn 50 words over night so it is important you remember that! Keep in mind I used other top learning toys for toddlers as well as an Aquadoodle.
So why an Aquadoodle? Well I combined Amelia’s interests with her learning. She is a little hyperactive so I needed something she enjoyed, something to hold her attention and the Aquadoodle worked! It was one of the fabulous Christmas toys for 18 month old girls that I definitely recommend. Like most little girls Amelia loves to scribble on a piece of paper! I realised that I should be using her scribbling as a learning aid! I wasn’t keen on the idea of pen going over our newly painted white walls so when my friend suggested we get her a water pen I jumped at the opportunity!
There are lots of Aquadoodles available including Paw Patrol ones, animal themed ones etc. but I picked a basic one by Tomy. It really does not matter which you use as they all are top learning toys for toddlers!
Aquadoodles can be used to help your toddler learn colors, numbers, counting, letters, words, animals, objects, how to write and lots more! They really are excellent toys that promote language development!
Step 1 – Let your toddler get used to holding the Aquadoodle pen! Amelia loved holding hers and scribbling randomly on the mat. I let her do this for around a week while pointing out the different colors on the mat. She was fascinated with how the mat went to orange, green, blue and yellow so quickly so this helped hold her attention.
Step 2 – Concentrate on one thing at a time! I started looking at the pictures around the Aquadoodle and telling Amelia what each one was! After a week she is now able to repeat some of these back to me when I point them out. My next stage here will be to ask her to find something on the mat to see if she remembers where it is!
A useful piece of advice is to fold the Aquadoodle up and place it out of reach during mealtimes. Yep you guessed it ours got covered in milk and as a result the water pen did not work!
Final Thoughts on Toys That Promote Language Development in Toddlers
Remember while toys are a fabulous way to help toddler learn to talk you should also use your surroundings and incorporate words into things you do on a daily basis! This is an awesome way to help your little one develop their vocabulary and learn new words!
